Temperature Check: Controlling Creativity
Why does the AI sometimes sound boring and sometimes sound crazy? It’s not a mood swing. It’s a setting called Temperature.
Most users never see this dial, but it controls the “Randomness” of the model.
In this guide, we will learn how to adjust the Creativity Thermostat.
1. Low Temperature (0.0 - 0.3)
“The Accountant Mode.” * Behavior: The AI picks the most likely word every single time. * Use Case: Coding, Math, Factual Summaries. * Risk: Repetitive and robotic.
2. High Temperature (0.7 - 1.0)
“The Artist Mode.” * Behavior: The AI takes risks. It picks less probable words. * Use Case: Poetry, Brainstorming, Fiction. * Risk: Hallucinations and nonsense.
3. How to Prompt It
Even if you don’t have a slider, you can ask for it. * Prompt: “Be highly creative and random.” (Simulates High Temp) * Prompt: “Be strictly factual and deterministic.” (Simulates Low Temp)
4. Visualizing the Dial
Look at the Thermometer Dial on the right.
At Low Temp, the “Next Word” choices are narrow and safe. At High Temp, the choices explode into a wide, colorful cloud. You are choosing between stability and chaos.
The Final Mystery
We’ve looked at the input (Tokens) and the settings (Temperature). Now, let’s peek at the brain itself in: The Black Box.
