The Bias Radar: Why AI Stereotypes

You ask an image generator for a “CEO,” and it shows 10 men in suits. You ask for a “Nurse,” and it shows 10 women.

Is the AI sexist? No. The AI is a mirror. It was trained on the internet, and the internet is full of our own historical biases. The AI isn’t “thinking” a stereotype; it’s statistically reproducing one.

In this guide, we will calibrate your Bias Radar to spot and correct these invisible tilts.

1. The Mirror Effect

AI models are trained on Training Data from books, articles, and websites written by humans over the last 100 years. If 80% of historical CEOs were men, the AI learns that “CEO” correlates with “Man.” * The Trap: We assume the AI is neutral math. It is not. It is frozen history.

2. Spotting the Tilt

Bias isn’t always obvious. * Cultural Bias: Ask for “Breakfast,” and it likely shows eggs and bacon (Western), not Congee (Asian). * Political Bias: It may refuse to joke about one politician but happily roast another, depending on its safety filters.

3. Correcting the Course

You have to manually push back. * The Prompt: “Write a story about a Doctor. Make the doctor a woman.” * The Prompt: “Give me examples of breakfast from 5 different continents.”

4. Visualizing the Lens
